About SIAM
Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM) is an international community of 14,000 individual members. Almost 500 academic, manufacturing, research and development, service and consulting organizations, government, and military organizations worldwide are institutional members. SIAM was incorporated in 1952 as a nonprofit organization to convey useful mathematical knowledge to other professionals who could implement mathematical theory for practical, industrial, or scientific use.
Our Mission
Through publications, research, and community, the mission of SIAM is to build cooperation between mathematics and the worlds of science and technology. Since our incorporation in 1952, SIAM’s goals have remained the same:
Our People & Purpose
Our members and volunteers are the lifeblood of the organization. We provide an inclusive environment that encourages the open expression and exchange of ideas, uplifting and supporting those in our community.
SIAM is the premier professional society for applied and industrial mathematicians. SIAM engages members at all levels through its student chapters, conferences, journals, prizes and awards programs, and member-driven activities. We welcome new members, ideas, and volunteers and are excited to continue growing our service to the community.

Our Areas of Focus
Publications
Journals
Since its inception, SIAM’s journal program has produced quality, peer-reviewed journals that are respected and highly-cited throughout the applied mathematics and computational science community.
Books
For several decades, SIAM has published research monographs and textbooks written by renowned experts, addressing fundamental subjects and emerging topics of vital interest in academia, industry, and government.
SIAM News
SIAM News, published 10 times a year, is the print and electronic newsjournal of SIAM, reporting on important issues and developments affecting the applied and computational mathematics community.
Membership
We are a community of 14,000 computational mathematicians, computer scientists, data scientists, numerical analysts, engineers, statisticians, physicists, educators, and students from more than 100 countries. Become a member and gain access to resources, cutting-edge research, invaluable networks, and more.
Activity Groups
SIAM Activity Groups provide a focused forum for SIAM members interested in exploring specific areas of applied mathematics, computational science, or applications.
Student Chapters
SIAM Student Chapters promote applied mathematics and computational science to young mathematicians and scientists.
Geographic Sections
SIAM encourages the formation of sections comprised of members residing in a defined geographic region. Sections organize lectures, meetings, and other activities that serve their members.
Conferences
SIAM conferences focus on timely topics in applied and computational mathematics and applications. These conferences provide a place for members to exchange ideas and expand their network of colleagues.
Programs and Resources
SIAM offers many resources for students, educators, and professionals, such as guidelines, reports, and videos. We also organize a robust portfolio of programs, like the MathWorks Math Modeling Challenge for high school juniors and seniors and the Gene Golub SIAM Summer School, a graduate-level program that offers courses in applied mathematics, computational science, and institutional mathematics. Our extensive prize program annually recognizes outstanding applied mathematicians and computational scientists.
Advocacy
The SIAM Committee on Science Policy has a continued presence in Washington, D.C., where we work with policymakers and actively advocate for science funding while also keeping our membership aware and knowledgeable on relevant policy issues. We are proud to write white papers in collaboration with other organizations, and to be highly involved in the national discussion about STEM education.
Prizes & Awards
Through prizes, we recognize applied mathematicians and computational scientists for their research contributions, lifetime achievements, and service to the applied mathematical sciences community.
Partnerships
At SIAM, we are proud to collaborate with other organizations and are highly-involved in enhancing and promoting STEM education. We believe in strengthening and enhancing our partnerships in order to further the innovations of the mathematical sciences nationally and globally.
