SIAM Journal Committee Charge

The SIAM Journal Committee provides advice to the SIAM Vice President for Publications on enhancing SIAM’s journal program, proposals for new SIAM journals, and updates to journal policies.

The committee’s duties include the following:

  • Annually assess the SIAM journal program, using information and data provided by the SIAM Publications Manager. The committee report may be very brief, focusing on issues (if any) in the following areas:
    • The overall standing of the journal program and its relevance to advancing mathematical science and related domains
    • Gaps in coverage of emerging domains relevant to the SIAM community
    • Expectations of editorial boards
    • Journal workflow evaluation
    • SIAM support for editors, authors, and the journal program overall
    • Ideas for increasing awareness and readership of SIAM journals
  • Review each SIAM journal whenever a new Editor-in-Chief is to be appointed, using data provided by the SIAM Journal Publications Manager and a survey of the journal’s Editorial Board. The report will evaluate:
    • The overall standing of the journal and its relevance to advancing its field
    • Gaps in coverage of emerging domains relevant to the journal
    • The editorial workload and board composition
    • Journal workflow
    • Candidates for next Editor-in-Chief
  • Evaluate proposal for new SIAM journals and for updates to editorial policies of existing journals.
  • Suggest revisions to SIAM journal policies, as documented on the Information for Journal Authors page. Such policies include, but are not limited to, conflict of interest policies, author integrity, and use of artificial intelligence.
  • Make recommendations on data collected for assessments of SIAM Journals Program.
  • Advise on other topics at the request of the SIAM Vice President for Publications.
Work and Reporting

The committee reports to the SIAM Vice President for Publications, and its findings are reflected in the annual SIAM Vice President for Publications report to the SIAM Board and Council.

Structure of the Journal Committee

The Journal Committee shall consist of ten appointed members including the chair. Members of the Journal Committee will be appointed by the SIAM President in consultation with the Vice President for Publications. Members may serve up to two consecutive three-year terms, although exceptions can be made in special circumstances. Committee membership should reflect the breadth and diversity of the Society. The SIAM Vice President for Publications is an ex officio member of the committee.

The SIAM Director of Publications serves as the SIAM staff representative to the committee.
