Programs & Initiatives

SIAM offers many programs and resources that support professionals, students, and teachers in applied mathematics and computational and data science. These programs are designed to foster the next generation of mathematical professionals. Additionally, SIAM prizes and awards recognize applied mathematicians and computational and data scientists for their research contributions, lifetime achievements, and service to the applied mathematical sciences community.

Gene Golub SIAM Summer School

The Gene Golub SIAM Summer School offers free graduate-level summer schools in applied mathematics, computational science, and industrial mathematics for up to 50 doctoral students. This program happens every summer and is free to attending students.

MathWorks Math Modeling (M3) Challenge

In this contest for high school juniors and seniors and sixth-form students, students experience what it’s like to work as a team to tackle a real-world problem under time and resource constraints, akin to those faced by professional mathematicians working in industry.

Visiting Lecturer Program

The SIAM Visiting Lecturer Program (VLP) provides the SIAM community with a roster of experienced and inspirational applied mathematicians and computational scientists in industry, government, and academia, who can speak on topics that are of interest to developing professional mathematicians.

SIAM-Simons Undergraduate Summer Research Program

This program will establish five sites across the U.S. for a six-week summer program of research and learning in applied mathematics and computational science. Each site will consist of one faculty member mentoring two students who will learn how to conduct scientific research, effectively communicate mathematics and computational science principles, and about careers in the mathematical sciences.

SIAM Science Policy Fellowship Program

This program enables post-doctoral fellows and early career researchers to be strong advocates for federal investments in applied mathematics and computational science. Fellowship recipients will receive in-person and remote training; attend the biannual SIAM Committee on Science Policy Meetings in Washington, D.C.; interface with federal officials; and participate in an advocacy day on Capitol Hill.

MGB-SIAM Early Career Fellowship

This fellowship recognizes the achievements of early career applied mathematicians–particularly those belonging to racial and ethnic groups historically excluded from the mathematical sciences in the United States—and provides support for professional activities and career development.
