AMS-SIAM Cathleen Synge Morawetz Prize in Applied Mathematics
Established in 2025, the prize honors Cathleen Synge Morawetz (1923-2017) recognizing her profound contributions to partial differential equations and mathematical fluid dynamics. The prize is awarded every three years by SIAM and AMS for an outstanding contribution to applied mathematics. Nominations can be submitted via the AMS website.
Prize Description
The AMS-SIAM Cathleen Synge Morawetz Prize recognizes outstanding contributions to applied mathematics in the highest and broadest sense. The prize is administered by AMS and awarded jointly by SIAM and AMS.
This prize was previously named the AMS-SIAM George David Birkhoff Prize in Applied Mathematics.

Eligibility Criteria
A candidate must be a member of AMS or SIAM in the year in which the nomination is made, and in each of the immediately prior three years (as of July 31 of each year).
For the 2027 award, the candidate must have been a member of AMS or SIAM since July 31, 2024.

About the Award
The AMS-SIAM Cathleen Synge Morawetz Prize in Applied Mathematics includes a $5,000 monetary award and a certificate containing the citation.

The AMS-SIAM Cathleen Synge Morawetz Prize in Applied Mathematics will next be awarded in January 2027 at the Joint Mathematics Meetings.
Award Presentation
The award is presented at the Prize Session and Reception during the Joint Mathematics Meetings. The announcement of the award will appear in SIAM News, the SIAM website, and appropriate electronic media.
Award Fund
The funds are held and managed by the AMS.
