This lecture on a mathematical topic accessible to the broader community is given each year at the Joint Mathematics Meetings. It is through the generosity and inspiration of Gerald and Judith Porter that MAA, AMS, and SIAM offer this series of annual lectures. Jerry is Professor Emeritus of Mathematics at the University of Pennsylvania where he taught for 41 years. He has served the MAA as Treasurer, as a member of the Board of Governors for 22 years, and as a member and chair of numerous committees, including chair of the Council on Prizes and Awards. Judith is Professor Emerita of Sociology at Bryn Mawr College where she taught for 44 years.
