Major Prizes & Lectures

The AWM-SIAM Sonia Kovalevsky Lecture is awarded annually by the Association for Women in Mathematics (AWM) and SIAM to highlight significant contributions of women to applied or computational mathematics. The lecture is normally given at the SIAM Annual Meeting.

The George Pólya Prize for Mathematical Exposition, established in 2013, is awarded every two years to an outstanding expositor of the mathematical sciences. The prize may be awarded for a specific work or for the cumulative impact of multiple expository works that communicate mathematics effectively. Following Pólya’s example, the nature of the work may range from popular accounts of mathematics and mathematical discovery to pedagogy to systematic organization of mathematical knowledge.

The George Pólya Prize in Combinatorics, originally established in 1969, is awarded every four years for a notable application of combinatorial theory. The prize is broadly intended to recognize specific work. The award may occasionally be made for cumulative work, but such awards should be rare.

The George Pólya Prize in Mathematics is awarded every four years for a significant contribution, as evidenced by a refereed publication, in an area of mathematics of interest to George Pólya not covered by the George Pólya Prize in Applied Combinatorics or the George Pólya Prize for Mathematical Exposition. Such areas may include approximation theory, complex analysis, number theory, orthogonal polynomials, probability theory, and mathematical discovery and learning. The Germund Dahlquist Prize is awarded every two years to one individual for original contributions to numerical solution of differential equations and numerical methods for scientific computing.

The I. E. Block Community Lecture is given annually at the SIAM Annual Meeting and is named in honor of the co-founder and former managing director of SIAM, I. Edward Block, to recognize his contributions to the growth of SIAM and to perpetuate his vision. The I. E. Block Community Lecture is open to the public and is intended to encourage public appreciation of the excitement and vitality of science. The lectures are intended to reach out as broadly as possible to students, teachers, and members of the local community, as well as to SIAM members, researchers, and practitioners in fields related to applied and computational mathematics.

The Ivo & Renata Babuška Prize will be awarded every two years in recognition of high-quality interdisciplinary work that targets any aspect of modeling and numerical solution of a specific engineering or scientific application, including mathematical modeling, numerical analysis, algorithms, and validation.The value of the work will be measured by the quality of the modeling, mathematics and computational science, its impact on an engineering or scientific application, and the extent to which it brings together interdisciplinary perspectives.

The James H. Wilkinson Prize for Numerical Software is awarded every four years to the authors of an outstanding piece of numerical software, or to individuals who have made an outstanding contribution to an existing piece of numerical software. The prize is awarded for an entry that best addresses all phases of the preparation of high-quality numerical software. It is intended to recognize innovative software in scientific computing and to encourage researchers in the earlier stages of their career. It has been awarded at the International Council for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (ICIAM) meetings since 1991. Starting in 2019, SIAM will award the prize every four years at the SIAM Conference on Computational Science and Engineering.

The James H. Wilkinson Prize in Numerical Analysis and Scientific Computing is awarded every four years to one individual for research in, or other contributions to, numerical analysis and scientific computing during the six years preceding the award year. The purpose of the prize is to stimulate early career contributors and to help them in their careers.

The prize may recognize either a formulation that enables the novel application of mathematical ideas or a formulation that raises new questions in mathematics. The prize is awarded for research completed in the fifteen years preceding the award date.

This prize, established in 1959, is awarded for outstanding and distinguished contributions to the field of applied mathematical sciences and for the effective communication of these ideas to the community. The recipient will receive a monetary award and will present a survey lecture at the annual meeting.

The Julian Cole Lectureship is awarded every four years to one individual for an outstanding contribution to the mathematical characterization and solution of a challenging problem in the physical or biological sciences, or in engineering, or for the development of mathematical methods for the solution of such problems.

The Ralph E. Kleinman Prize is awarded every two years to one individual for outstanding research or other contributions that bridge the gap between mathematics and applications. Work that uses high-level mathematics and/or invents new mathematical tools to solve applied problems from engineering, science, and technology is particularly appropriate.

The Richard C. DiPrima Prize is awarded every two years to one early career researcher who has done outstanding research in applied mathematics and who has completed his/her doctoral dissertation and completed all other requirements for his/her doctorate.

The SIAM Industry Prize is awarded every year to an individual researcher or team (referred to as “awardee”) who has had outstanding contributions to the effective application of mathematical sciences to industry. This work and its impact may be documented in letters that convey the significance and importance of the work, and/or peer reviewed papers, conference proceedings and/or patents.

The SIAM Outstanding Paper Prizes are awarded every year to the authors of the three most outstanding papers published in SIAM journals. The prize is intended to recognize papers that exhibit originality, for example, papers that bring a fresh look at an existing field or that open up new areas of applied mathematics.

The prize is awarded every year to an applied mathematician who has made distinguished contributions to the furtherance of applied mathematics on the national or international level.

The SIAM/ACM Prize in Computational Science and Engineering is awarded every two years by SIAM and the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) in the area of computational science to one individual or a group of individuals in recognition of outstanding contributions to the development and use of mathematical and computational tools and methods for the solution of science and engineering problems.

The Theodore von Kármán Prize is awarded for a notable application of mathematics to mechanics and/or the engineering sciences made during the five to ten years preceding the award. The award may be given for a significant achievement by one individual or a significant body of work that could have been produced by multiple contributors.

The W. T. and Idalia Reid Prize is awarded annually to one individual for research in, or other contributions to, the broadly defined areas of differential equations and control theory.
