AWM-SIAM Sonia Kovalevsky Lecture

This joint prize was established in 2002 to honor Sonia Kovalevsky and her work on the theory of differential equations. It is awarded to anyone in the scientific or engineering community whose work highlights the achievements of women in applied and computational mathematics. Nominations can be submitted via the Association for Women in Mathematics (AWM) website.

Prize Description

The AWM-SIAM Sonia Kovalevsky Lecture is awarded annually by the Association for Women in Mathematics (AWM) and SIAM to highlight significant contributions of women to applied or computational mathematics. The lecture is normally given at the SIAM Annual Meeting.

Eligibility Criteria

The lectureship may be awarded to anyone in the scientific or engineering community whose work highlights the achievements of women in applied or computational mathematics.

Required Materials

  • Nominator’s letter of recommendation outlining the candidate’s contributions
  • Publications list of some of the candidate’s most important research papers
  • Citation of about 100 words that may be read when introducing the lecturer
  • CV of the candidate (not to exceed three pages)

About the Award

The award consists of a plaque containing the citation and signed by the AWM President and the SIAM President along with a monetary award of $2,000. Reasonable travel expenses for the lecturer to the award ceremony will be shared by AWM and SIAM. In addition, the registration fee for the meeting will be waived for the lecturer.

The AWM-SIAM Sonia Kovalevsky Lecture will next be awarded at the 2025 SIAM Annual Meeting.

Award Presentation

The award will be presented jointly by the presidents at the SIAM Annual Meeting. Announcements of the award will appear in the AWM Newsletter and SIAM News.
