2017 Ya-xiang Yuan
Citation: The 2017 SIAM Prize for Distinguished Service to the Profession is awarded to Ya-xiang Yuan for his extraordinary achievements in developing and promoting applied mathematics in general and optimization in particular in China.
2016 Linda R. Petzold
Citation: The 2016 SIAM Prize for Distinguished Service to the Profession is awarded to Linda R. Petzold for her strong, long-term advocacy for computational science and applied mathematics and for her role in molding national policy in research and education in these multidisciplinary fields. Her work has been accomplished through service on numerous panels and advisory committees at DOE, NSF, CRA and NRC, and on the Scientific Committees of several math institutes and centers. In SIAM, Petzold has served as VP at Large, VP for Publications, and on the Committee on Science Policy. She has also served on a number of editorial boards including as Editor-in-Chief of the SIAM Journal on Scientific Computing. Petzold’s efforts have profoundly influenced the high status in which contemporary computational science and applied mathematics are held worldwide.
2015 Carlos Castillo-Chavez
Citation: The 2015 SIAM Prize for Distinguished Service to the Profession is awarded to Carlos Castillo-Chavez for his extraordinary mentoring that has helped bring numerous underrepresented and economically disadvantaged students at all levels to the mathematical sciences; for his extensive research record in mathematical biology and epidemiology; for his distinguished service on numerous national committees and advisory boards at SIAM, the Mathematics Institutes, US National Science Foundation, US National Institutes of Health, and elsewhere; and for his lifelong commitment to successfully promoting diversity in our community.
2014 Arieh Iserles
Citation: Arieh Iserles, Professor in Numerical Analysis of Differential Equations at Cambridge University, is awarded the SIAM Prize for Distinguished Service to the Profession for his outstanding editorial contributions to applied mathematics. In 1992 he founded Acta Numerica, an annual volume that publishes seminal review articles in numerical analysis and scientific computing, and he has been Editor ever since. Under his guidance and leadership, Acta Numerica has published authoritative articles that are widely read and highly cited, and it has continued to keep pace with rapidly evolving trends in research. Iserles has also made major and long-standing editorial contributions to the Journal of Foundations of Computational Mathematics and the IMA Journal of Numerical Analysis. In all his editorial work, he acts with extraordinary dedication, wisdom and integrity.
2013 Douglas N. Arnold
Citation: Douglas N. Arnold, the McKnight Presidential Professor of Mathematics at the University of Minnesota, is awarded the SIAM Prize for Distinguished Service to the Profession for his many contributions to serving and promoting applied mathematics. As Director of the Institute for Mathematics and its Applications (IMA, 2001-2008), Arnold nurtured the IMA's industrial postdoctoral program, raised the profile of the IMA Public Lecture series, and grew the IMA to the largest mathematics research investment in the history of the National Science Foundation (NSF). Arnold is extremely active in representing mathematics nationally and internationally through service on advisory and scientific boards for the NSF, the ICM, ICIAM and other organizations. He has taken a leading role in discussions about citations and journal impact factors and in exposing unethical scholarly publishing behavior. His award-winning 2007 video "Möbius Transformations Revealed" has had over two million views on YouTube. In SIAM, Arnold has made deep and long-lasting contributions during his Presidency (2009-2010) and through his service on the SIAM Committee on Science Policy.
2012 Barbara Lee Keyfitz
Citation: Barbara Keyfitz is awarded the SIAM Prize for Distinguished Service to the Profession for her long-term and pervasive advocacy of applied mathematics in several leadership roles. As the Director of the Fields Institute in Toronto (2004 – 2008), Keyfitz revitalized applied mathematics programming at the Institute with initiatives such as the successful Fields-MITACS Industrial Problem-Solving workshops. The innovative Canada-wide graduate industrial research internship program for students in the mathematical sciences was created by MITACS-NCE while she served on its Board of Directors. The program has since expanded from applied mathematics to cover all disciplines. She was President of the Association for Women in Mathematics (2005 – 2006). In SIAM, Keyfitz served as Vice President for Programs (1998-2003), and was instrumental in forming closer links between SIAM’s US-based and Mexican communities, in particular through the organization of numerous SIAM-SMM conferences. Currently, as President of ICIAM, she is leading applied mathematics globally.
