MGB-SIAM Early Career Fellowship
The MGB-SIAM Early Career Fellowship recognizes the achievements of early career applied mathematicians–particularly those belonging to racial and ethnic groups historically excluded from the mathematical sciences in the United States—and provides support for professional activities and career development. The fellowship reflects a joint commitment by Mathematically Gifted & Black (MGB) and SIAM to promote long-term engagement of fellows within SIAM and continued success within the wider applied mathematics and computational sciences community.
About the Fellowship
An MGB-SIAM Early Career Fellowship will allow for multiple opportunities to network within the SIAM community. These may include, but are not limited to, special thematic luncheons, professional development workshops and organization, committee shadowing, cohort-specific activities, as well as formal and informal mentoring.
Each year, a cohort of 5-8 fellowships will be awarded, with a fellowship duration of three (3) years.
Fellows will:
- Receive complimentary SIAM membership for the duration of the fellowship;
- Receive 50% reduction in SIAM membership fees for the four (4) years immediately after their fellowship has ended;
- Have registration fees waived and receive $700 of travel support to attend the SIAM Annual Meeting each year for the duration of the fellowship;
- Have registration fees waived and receive $700 of travel support to attend one additional SIAM Activity Group conference of the fellow’s choice in the United States or Canada.
Fellowship Responsibilities
- Co-organize at least one (1) minisymposium in their research area at the SIAM Annual Meeting or at another SIAM Activity Group conference of the fellow’s choice in the United States or Canada;
- Present a talk in at least one (1) Workshop Celebrating Diversity session.

- Applicant Statement (Maximum 500 words): The SIAM community is a diverse collection of practitioners of industrial and applied mathematics and computational, data science. The applicant statement should provide details describing:
- why the applicant is committed to industrial and applied mathematics, computational science, and data science;
- how the applicant has previously supported and currently supports diversity, equity, and inclusion in their community; and
- what the applicant hopes to get out of the SIAM community as well as what they hope to contribute to the community.
- Two (2) letters of recommendation
- Applicants will be required to provide the names and email addresses of two letter of recommendation writers.
- If selected as a finalist, the letter of recommendation writers will be contacted and prompted to submit a letter for review by the selection committee.
- The letters of recommendation should discuss the recommender’s knowledge of the applicant’s actual contributions and potential contributions to diversity, equity, and inclusion in the SIAM community.
I am looking forward to connecting with the other fellows in my cohort. I am particularly excited about the minisymposium I will be organizing, and I plan on utilizing SIAM's resources and network to reach and attract a diverse audience. I hope to help develop sustainable spaces within SIAM for students and early career scientists from underrepresented groups, which will foster their sense of belonging in the applied mathematics community.
