Call for Papers: SISC Special Section on Quantum Computing

SIAM Journal on Scientific Computing (SISC) invites submissions for a Special Section of the journal on “Quantum Computing: Numerical Algorithms and Applications.”

Submissions will be accepted from October 1, 2025 until April 30, 2026. The review process of each submitted manuscript will start immediately after submission, and accepted papers will be published online on a rolling basis, a short time after their acceptance.

The year 2025 is the International Year of Quantum Science and Technology (IYQ 2025), celebrating the 100th anniversary of the discovery of quantum mechanics. Since Richard Feynman’s seminal lectures on the potential advantages of quantum systems for scientific computations, both quantum hardware and quantum algorithms have advanced significantly. We are on the verge of seeing early uptake of this unconventional compute paradigm for solving problems from the discipline of scientific computing. At the same time, traditional scientific computing methods continue to play an important role in solving some of the grand challenges on the path toward practical quantum computing.

The scope of the Special Section is broad, and encompasses two focus areas:

1. Quantum Algorithms for Scientific Computing Applications including

  • Quantum algorithms for solving differential equations
  • Linear and nonlinear systems
  • Eigenvalue problems
  • Preconditioning
  • Optimization
  • Machine learning
  • With applications in broad areas that may include:
    • Fluid mechanics
    • Solid mechanics
    • Physics
    • Materials science
    • Other areas of science, engineering, and technology

2. Scientific Computing Methods for Quantum Computing Science including

  • Tensor network representations to speed up quantum computing simulators
  • Numerical methods to model physical qubits and quantum processors
  • Numerical optimal control methods for designing quantum gates and pulse shapes

Submissions to the Special Section should present algorithmic contributions in the context of a full algorithmic stack that advances end-to-end quantum applications instead of focusing on some core components of quantum algorithms in isolation. This requires, for example, including references or descriptions of concrete approaches for state preparation and extracting results. The scope of the Special Section includes various technologies of quantum computing including gate-based quantum computers, quantum annealers, and hybrid quantum-classical approaches. Evaluation of the proposed numerical algorithms in computational experiments, for example, in simulation environments or on actual quantum hardware, is a mandatory part of publications submitted to the Special Section, as well as comparison to best-in-class alternatives.

Submissions

All interested should submit a manuscript and cover letter in PDF format via SISC's online submission site.

Note the block labeled Section (just under the keywords block on your submission screen) and select "Special Section” from the dropdown box. Directly below this is a second block labeled Special Section, where you’ll want to select “Quantum Computing: Numerical Algorithms and Applications” from the dropdown.
