SIAM Participates in the #MathSciOnTheHill Day

On January 8, 2026, SIAM members visited Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C. to participate in the #MathSciOnTheHill Day after the 2026 Joint Mathematics Meetings.

During the #MathSciOnTheHill Day, SIAM members joined with members from 11 other mathematical sciences societies to advocate for research funding in the U.S. and promote the importance of mathematics and computational science. Together, a group of almost 300 mathematicians from 47 states visited Congress to emphasize the importance of mathematical sciences research and education. A total of 274 meetings took place between participants and their senators and congressional representatives to discuss topics including National Science Foundation funding, mathematics education, and the impact of AI. 

A congressional briefing titled "Mathematics: The Strategic Engine of Discovery, Competitiveness, and Security" was held over lunch. Panelists included Karen Willcox, SIAM Fellow and Director of the Oden Institute for Computational Engineering and Sciences at The University of Texas at Austin, and Eleanor Jenkins, SIAM Vice President for Education and Professor of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences at Clemson University. Panelists connected with congressional staff to communicate the importance of mathematical sciences for innovations in science, engineering, and technology. They emphasized that advances in mathematical research are crucial for national security, the U.S. economy, and technological innovations.
